Every document an officer will look for, grouped in the order they are read. The ones marked refusal risk are where these applications actually fail — a complete file is not the same as a persuasive one.

Identity
Who is this person, and is the story consistent?Where files fail here: Names, dates or passport details that disagree across documents.
Proof of relationship to your child or grandchild
Your host’s birth or baptismal certificate, or another official document naming you as the parent or grandparent. The entire category rests on this.
Valid passport
The visa can run up to ten years, but is capped at one month before your passport expires.
Eligibility

Eligible medical insurance
At least $100,000 in emergency coverage, valid one year from the date of entry. A Canadian insurer, or an insurer outside Canada authorised by OSFI — foreign policies are accepted.
Funds
Is the money real, available, and theirs?Where files fail here: A large deposit landing days before filing, with no explanation.
Host’s income proof
The minimum is plain LICO for the household size — not the LICO+30% used for parent sponsorship — and it need only be met in either of the two tax years before you apply. Since 31 March 2026 the visiting parent’s own income can be added to cover a shortfall.
Signed letter of financial support
A signed promise of support for the visit, listing the family size used and the income proof. It is not a sponsorship undertaking and carries no statutory enforcement — do not describe it as one.
Intent
Does the purpose hold together, and will they comply?Where files fail here: A plan that doesn't match the applicant's history or finances.
Proof of ties in your home country
Five years per entry is still a visit. The officer must believe you intend to return.
Admissibility
Is there anything that disqualifies them?Where files fail here: An old charge left undisclosed because it “didn’t count”.
