The planner

Put your date on the line.

Four questions. The answer updates as you type, and nothing you enter leaves this page.

1 · The permit you hold (or last held)
2 · Its expiry date
3 · Have you applied for a new permit or an extension?
4 · What else applies to you?

Tick any that are true. These decide which options the planner shows.

A planning guide built only from the IRCC rules on this page, not legal advice. Nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

    How status works

The four states you can be in.

    Valid
Your permit is still in force. What happens next depends on applying for your next permit, or an extension, before the expiry date. IRCC recommends applying at least 30 days before it expires. Source: IRCC
    Maintained status
If IRCC received your application to extend or change your status before it expired, you may stay in Canada under the same conditions as your expiring permit until IRCC decides. It ends if you leave Canada, or if the application is returned as incomplete. Source: IRCC
    Restoration window
If your status ended because your permit expired or your application was refused, you may apply to restore it within 90 days, as long as you did not work or study without authorization. You must stay in Canada, and you cannot work or study until IRCC restores your status. Source: IRCC
    Out of status
After the 90 days, restoration is no longer available, except for workers with an eligible provincial or territorial support letter. IRCC’s instruction is to leave Canada and apply again from outside. Get advice from a licensed professional before you do anything. Source: IRCC

    Questions

    Expiring permits, answered.

What happens on the day my permit expires?
If IRCC received your application for a new permit or an extension before that day, you are on maintained status: you may stay and keep the same conditions until IRCC decides. If you did not apply, your status ends, you must stop working or studying, and you have 90 days to apply to restore it.
Can I keep working after my work permit expires?
Only if you applied for a new work permit before it expired and you stay in Canada. If you applied for a study permit or a visitor record instead, or did not apply at all, your work stops on the expiry date.
    When should I apply?
IRCC recommends at least 30 days before your permit expires. What protects you is that IRCC receives the application before the expiry date.
    Is the planner legal advice?
No. It applies the general IRCC rules on this page to the dates you enter. A licensed RCIC should confirm your situation before you file.
Does the planner save what I enter?
No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to us or stored.
