Work permit extension — document checklist

Every document an officer will look for, grouped in the order they are read. The ones marked refusal risk are where these applications actually fail — a complete file is not the same as a persuasive one.

Identity

Who is this person, and is the story consistent?

Where files fail here: Names, dates or passport details that disagree across documents.

Submit before your permit expires

Online applications must be in before midnight UTC on the day your permit expires — 8 p.m. in Ontario in summer, 7 p.m. in winter. In time, you are on maintained status and may keep working under the same conditions while IRCC decides.

Valid passport

IRCC cannot extend your work permit beyond your passport’s expiry date. Renew the passport first if it runs out sooner.

Eligibility

Do they meet this program's bar, on paper?

Where files fail here: A requirement evidenced by assertion instead of a document.

Positive LMIA or CAQ, where your job needs one

Most applicants who need an LMIA should wait for the positive decision letter. If your permit expires in two weeks or less and your employer has already filed a complete LMIA, you may apply with proof of the job offer, the LMIA receipt number and the code CPTS2026 in the Job title field. IRCC will not decide until the LMIA arrives.

Refusal risk Employer via ESDC

Funds

Is the money real, available, and theirs?

Where files fail here: A large deposit landing days before filing, with no explanation.

Payment by credit or debit card

$155 work permit fee. An open work permit adds the $100 open work permit holder fee. Biometrics ($85) only if IRCC asks for them after you apply.

Admissibility

Is there anything that disqualifies them?

Where files fail here: An old charge left undisclosed because it “didn’t count”.

Your personalised document checklist

Answer the questionnaire in your IRCC account and upload everything on the checklist it generates. IRCC says applications missing documents may be refused.

Renew provincial ID before the expiry date

On maintained status you cannot renew a driver’s licence or health card, or apply for or update a SIN. Do these while your permit is still valid.

General information, not legal advice. This checklist is prepared by CHK Immigration Services Inc. and was checked against the Government of Canada’s published requirements on the date shown. Requirements change and vary by case, and IRCC generates a personalised document list for many applications — where that list or canada.ca differs from this document, they govern.

Lead times are planning estimates, not guarantees. Police certificates and credential assessments in particular vary widely by country and provider. IRCC makes all final decisions.

Having the documents is not the same as having a persuasive file.

Every item above can be present and correct and the application can still be refused — on intent, on a date that does not reconcile, or on a lead time that ran out. A licensed consultant reads it the way an officer will.
