Extensions, PR cards and documents.

These don't depend on your country. Apply to extend before your status expires and you can usually keep living, working or studying on the same conditions while you wait.

Same application, different wait.

Visa offices abroad carry different loads, so the time depends on where you apply from. The most common countries we see, side by side.

Reading the numbers

A guide, not a promise.

  1. What the number measures

How long IRCC took to process most applications of this type recently, from the day it receives a complete application to the day it decides. Your own file can be faster or slower.

  2. What makes a file slower

Missing documents, a request for biometrics or a medical exam, an interview, or extra background checks all add time. A complete, well-organised application is the one thing you control.

  3. Permanent residence isn't on this board

Express Entry, provincial nominee, sponsorship and citizenship grant times are published separately on IRCC's processing times tool. See our Express Entry, OINP and citizenship guides.

  4. When a wait goes far past the published time

Check your account and any messages first. After that, the usual options are a case-specific enquiry, ordering your GCMS notes, or in a long, unexplained delay, a writ of mandamus.
