Spousal sponsorship from Brampton

Two lives, one permanent residence application. We help Brampton sponsors choose inland or outland, build evidence an officer can follow, and file it cleanly. A licensed RCIC prepares and signs off every file at our Mayfield Road office.

01 · The route

Where is your partner today?

This is the first decision, and it shapes everything after it: working, travel, and what happens if the answer is no.

  • Where your partner is

Already in Canada and living with you in Brampton.

Anywhere, including outside Canada. The file goes to the visa office for their country.

  • Living together

You keep living together while IRCC processes the file.

Not required while the file is in process.

  • Working while you wait

Your partner can generally get an open work permit while the application is in progress.

Not an automatic part of this route. Ask us about the options on your facts.

  • Travel

Leaving Canada while the file is open carries a re-entry risk.

Not tied to the application, subject to valid documents.

  • If it is refused

No appeal to the Immigration Appeal Division. The remedy is judicial review at the Federal Court.

You keep a right of appeal to the Immigration Appeal Division.

Both routes: the same government fees and a three-year undertaking. Current fees and IRCC processing times are in the spousal sponsorship guide.

02 · The evidence

What you already have

Most couples already have the proof. The work is choosing the right pieces and putting them in an order an officer can follow quickly.

  1. One address, both names

A lease or mortgage for your Brampton home, utility and internet bills, and Ontario IDs that show the same address.

  2. Money that mixes

A joint account, shared bills, money sent between you, and each other named on insurance or benefits.

  3. Family who knows

Photos across time with both families, wedding or religious ceremony records, and letters from people who know you as a couple.

  4. Time apart, documented

For couples living apart: tickets, passport stamps, and the call and message history that shows the relationship continued.

  5. The marriage itself

The marriage certificate, or 12 months of living together for a common-law relationship, with the dates that prove it.

03 · Practicalities

The paperwork around the application

These are the things that slow Brampton files down, usually because they come in late.

Marriage licence

Getting married in Ontario first? Licences are issued by municipal clerks, including the City of Brampton. Bring the registered certificate, not only the ceremony record.

Police certificates

Your partner needs one from each country they have lived in for six months or more since turning 18.

Medical exam

When IRCC asks, the exam has to be done by an IRCC panel physician. The official search lists doctors in Brampton and across Peel.

Working while inland

Partners filing inland can usually apply for an open work permit, so the wait does not have to mean months without an income.

04 · Questions

What Brampton couples ask us

Is there a minimum income to sponsor my spouse from Brampton?

In most cases, no. Sponsoring a spouse, common-law partner or dependent child has no minimum income, unless the child you include has a child of their own. You sign a three-year undertaking to support your partner from the day they become a permanent resident.

How long does it take, and what does it cost?

IRCC publishes processing times that change through the year, and the government fees are the same for inland and outland. Both are kept current on our spousal sponsorship guide so the figures only live in one place.

My partner is in Brampton on a study or work permit. Inland or outland?

Either can work. Inland usually brings an open work permit while you wait. Outland keeps the right of appeal and freedom to travel. The right choice depends on your partner’s status, their travel plans and their immigration history, so we decide it together before anything is filed.

Our first application was refused. Can we apply again?

Often, yes. First we get the officer’s notes (GCMS) to see the real reason. A new file that does not fix that reason tends to get the same answer. See refusals and remedies.

Do we have to come to the office?

No. Couples often like to go through the evidence together at the Mayfield Road office, but everything can be done by phone, email and secure upload.
