Parent and grandparent sponsorship — document checklist

Paused — not accepting applications

Intake was paused on 15 July 2026 and the interest-to-sponsor pool is closed too — IRCC is not accepting new interest forms and is issuing no invitations until further notice. The last intake was 2025, drawn from people who submitted interest back in 2020. Existing applications are still being processed. For most families the live option today is the super visa, whose income rules eased on 31 March 2026.

Status checked September 2026 against the official IRCC page. The list below is kept for reference — applications already in the queue are still being processed against these rules.

Kept for people whose application is already in the queue, and for anyone working out what changed.

Identity

Who is this person, and is the story consistent?

Where files fail here: Names, dates or passport details that disagree across documents.

Document checklist

An incomplete sponsorship is returned, and a returned application is treated as never filed — which also means no right of appeal.

Generic application, background and travel history forms

A parent or grandparent with decades of history across several countries stalls at the background stage more often than anywhere else.

Eligibility

Do they meet this program's bar, on paper?

Where files fail here: A requirement evidenced by assertion instead of a document.

Application to sponsor, agreement and undertaking

Signed by the sponsor and co-signed by the person being sponsored. The undertaking runs 20 years federally, 10 years in Quebec.

Funds

Is the money real, available, and theirs?

Where files fail here: A large deposit landing days before filing, with no explanation.

Financial Evaluation for parent and grandparent sponsorship

Income must meet LICO plus 30% in each of the three taxation years before the application, with family size recalculated year by year. This is where most PGP files fail on the merits.

Notices of Assessment, or the income sources form

Income has to be provable from CRA records. Self-reported figures without notices of assessment will not carry the file.

Admissibility

Is there anything that disqualifies them?

Where files fail here: An old charge left undisclosed because it “didn’t count”.

Immigration medical exam

Parents and grandparents are the family-class group most exposed to health findings, and an exam that expires during a two-year queue has to be redone.

General information, not legal advice. This checklist is prepared by CHK Immigration Services Inc. and was checked against the Government of Canada’s published requirements on the date shown. Requirements change and vary by case, and IRCC generates a personalised document list for many applications — where that list or canada.ca differs from this document, they govern.

Lead times are planning estimates, not guarantees. Police certificates and credential assessments in particular vary widely by country and provider. IRCC makes all final decisions.

CHK Immigration Services Inc. is an immigration consultancy with offices in Brampton and London, Ontario. Our consultants are regulated by the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC). Nothing in this document creates a client–consultant relationship.

Checked against the official IRCC page for this application in September 2026. Where that page disagrees with anything here, it wins. General information, not legal advice. Lead times are planning estimates, not guarantees — police certificates and credential assessments in particular vary widely by country and provider. IRCC also generates a personalised checklist for many applications, and that list governs. IRCC makes all final decisions.

Having the documents is not the same as having a persuasive file.

Every item above can be present and correct and the application can still be refused — on intent, on a date that does not reconcile, or on a lead time that ran out. A licensed consultant reads it the way an officer will.
