Ask an RCIC

How it works

A code is a claim, not an approval.

For an employer-specific exempt permit, this is the order things happen in. Open work permits (C41, C43, A70, A75 and similar) skip the employer steps.

  1. The employer picks the code

The offer of employment is submitted in IRCC's Employer Portal under the exemption that fits the job and the worker.

  2. The employer pays the fee

The employer compliance fee is paid with the offer, and the worker receives the offer of employment number.

  3. The worker applies

The work permit application quotes that number; the exemption code is filled in from the offer.

  4. An officer decides

The officer checks that the worker and the job really meet the exemption. A wrong code is one of the quickest ways to a refusal.
