Canada invites teachers and early childhood educators through their own Express Entry category, at scores below the general rounds. It asks for teaching experience and an assessed degree — not an Ontario teaching certificate. Written for educators applying from outside Canada.
What Canada asks of a teacher — and what it doesn’t.
A teacher or early childhood educator qualifies for the education category with 12 months of full-time experience (or the same amount part-time) in the last three years, from any country. Add an education assessment and a language test, and you can be invited.
You need
- 12 months of teaching or ECE experience in the last three years, full-time or the part-time equivalent. It does not have to be continuous.
- An Educational Credential Assessment of your degree or diploma.
- An approved English or French test — General Training, not Academic.
- An Express Entry profile that meets one of the federal programs.
You don’t need
- An Ontario College of Teachers certificate
- A job offer or a Canadian school board
- Canadian work experience
- A Canadian B.Ed
Certification is a separate file — and you can start it early.
Ontario Certified Teacher status is what lets you teach in a publicly funded school once you are here. It is not a condition of being invited or of becoming a permanent resident. Unlike nursing, the College does not wait for your immigration status, so the two files can run side by side.

Secondary school teachers
Teachers of grades 7 to 12 in public, private and international schools. Subject teachers, PGT and TGT roles usually sit here.
Elementary school and kindergarten teachers
Primary and kindergarten teachers, including PRT roles. Your school letter, not your degree title, decides the code.
Early childhood educators and assistants
Preschool, nursery and daycare educators. The fastest-growing part of the category, and the one Ontario and British Columbia also target directly.
Instructors of persons with disabilities
Special education instructors who teach students with physical, developmental or learning disabilities.
Elementary and secondary school teacher assistants
Also in the category, for teaching assistants whose duties match this code.
Lecturers and professors?
University professors and college instructors are not in the education category. Post-secondary teaching with Canadian experience falls under the 2026 researchers category instead.
IRCC renewed the education category for 2026 in February 2026 and raised the experience requirement from six months to twelve. School counsellors and post-secondary instructors are not included.
Applying from outside Canada.
Most of the teachers we advise are applying from India, the Philippines, Nigeria and the Gulf. The rules are the same wherever you are — but these four things reliably cost people time.
General Training, not Academic
IRCC accepts CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training, PTE Core, TEF Canada and TCF Canada. The College of Teachers wants IELTS Academic — a different test, taken later.
Start the assessment first
It depends on your university sending transcripts — the one step you do not control. Assess your highest credential; a B.Ed plus a bachelor’s can be assessed together.
School letters carry the file
Overseas experience counts in full. The letter must state the grades and subjects taught, hours per week and salary, on school letterhead, signed by the principal or HR.
One for every country
You need one for each country where you lived six months or more since age 18 — for many teachers that includes the Gulf or a year abroad. Start early.
Two tests, two purposes
IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core for immigration. If you later apply to the Ontario College of Teachers and trained in a language other than English, it asks for IELTS Academic separately.
Police Clearance Certificate
Issued through Passport Seva, an Indian embassy or consulate abroad, or local police. A school character certificate is not accepted.
Two-year B.Ed fits better than one
For immigration, your code follows the grades you taught. For certification, Ontario asks for a four-semester teacher education program with 80 practicum days — the two-year B.Ed (2015 onward) meets it far more often than the old one-year B.Ed.
General Training, not Academic
IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core. Results must be under two years old when you create your profile and when you apply.
NBI clearance
The NBI multi-purpose clearance. If you have taught in the Gulf, Thailand or elsewhere for six months or more, you need that country’s certificate too.
BEEd and BSEd map cleanly
A four-year education degree generally meets both the degree and the teacher-education requirements. Your LET licence adds no CRS points, but your assessment is based on the degree.
A test is still required
Every applicant needs an approved result, whatever the language of instruction at your university: IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core.
Police character certificate
From the Nigeria Police Force Central Criminal Registry, or the Ghana Police Service CID, plus a certificate for any other country where you lived six months or more.
B.Ed, B.A.(Ed) or NCE plus PGDE
A four-year B.Ed or B.A./B.Sc.(Ed) usually meets Ontario’s requirements. An NCE on its own is a diploma; paired with a degree and a PGDE it is assessed as a whole.
General Training, not Academic
IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core are accepted; Academic versions are not. Results must be under two years old.
Get it before you leave
You need a certificate from each Gulf country where you lived six months or more. They are much harder to obtain once you have left, so arrange them while you are still there.
Assessed where you trained
Your degree is assessed on the country where you studied, not where you taught. International-school experience counts in full if letters state grades, hours and salary.
A test is still required
Every applicant needs an approved result, whatever their first language: IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core.
ACRO or Garda
The ACRO police certificate for the United Kingdom, and a Garda certificate for Ireland, plus any other country where you lived six months or more.
QTS is not an Ontario certificate
A PGCE with QTS is well understood by the College, but it is still evaluated. Teachers trained in the UK and Ireland are exempt from Ontario’s language proficiency test.

B.Ed, PGCE or diploma? Two bodies, two questions.
The most common confusion among internationally trained teachers comes from treating one qualification as one answer. It is two: IRCC reads your work, the College reads your training.
Your code follows the work you did
The code you claim reflects the grades and subjects you taught, not the title of your degree. A teacher with a one-year B.Ed teaching grade 10 falls under 41220 if the school letter says so.
Your certificate follows your training
Ontario asks for a degree of at least three years, plus a teacher education program of four semesters covering two consecutive divisions with 80 days of supervised practice teaching. A one-year program is evaluated against that standard.
So a teacher can qualify for the education category and still be asked by the College to complete additional teacher education after landing. That is not a problem with the immigration file — it changes what your first year in Canada looks like, and it is better known before you plan than after. Early childhood educators register with a different body, the College of Early Childhood Educators, on a diploma standard.
The assessment you need now — and the one you don’t.
For the application you need an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA). It compares your degree to a Canadian credential, earns your education points and, on the Federal Skilled Worker route, makes you eligible at all.

Teachers use the general list
Physicians, pharmacists and architects have their own designated bodies. Teachers do not — so there is no teaching-specific assessment to hunt for at this stage. Assess your degree and your B.Ed together.
Age, and what it does not do
The report must be under five years old when you create your profile and when you apply. And an ECA does not certify you — the College runs its own evaluation, and the College of ECEs asks specifically for a WES report.
What the category actually changes.
In a general round every candidate competes on score alone. An education round ranks only candidates with eligible experience — a far smaller group — so the cut-off is lower.
Latest education round: 17 September 2025
The lowest score invited was CRS 462, against 534 in the Canadian Experience Class round the same week. IRCC has not yet held an education round in 2026; the category was renewed in February and can be drawn at any time. So the first question is not “is my score high enough” but “does my experience put me in the category at all.” See every round.
What the category changes — and what it doesn’t
- Changes: who you are ranked against — only candidates with eligible education experience.
- Does not change: your CRS score. There are no extra points for being in the category.
- Does not change: the need for a profile that meets a federal program.
- Not scheduled: IRCC runs education rounds when it chooses. Two were held in 2025, in May and September.

Getting certified to teach in Ontario.
To teach in a publicly funded school you need to be an Ontario Certified Teacher. The College of Teachers evaluates internationally educated applicants on six requirements, and the file can be opened before you land.
- A postsecondary degreeAt least three years of full-time study, or 90 credits, beyond secondary school, from an acceptable institution.
- A teacher education programAt least four semesters, preparing you for two consecutive divisions, with a minimum of 80 days (400 hours) of practice teaching supervised by the program.
- Language proficiencyIf your teacher education was in a language other than English or French. IELTS Academic is the usual route, at a higher band than IRCC asks for. Teachers trained in the UK, Ireland, the US, Australia and other listed countries are exempt.
- The Mathematics Proficiency TestRequired for applications received on or after February 1, 2025, with a pass mark of 70% in each section. Teachers already certified elsewhere in Canada are exempt.
- The Sexual Abuse Prevention ProgramAn online program every applicant completes before certification.
- Statement of professional standing and a criminal record checkA statement from every jurisdiction where you have been certified, and a Canadian criminal record check no more than six months old when the College receives it. This is the step that usually waits for landing.
- FeesAbout $362 for internationally educated applicants, which includes the evaluation, then an annual membership fee. Applications are valid for one year and evaluated within about 60 days once complete.
If the category isn’t your best route.
For some educators — especially those with a job offer, or already in Canada — a provincial route can move faster than waiting for an education round.
Ontario Workforce Priority stream
Ontario’s 2026 stream for workers with a full-time, permanent job offer. Teachers (TEER 1) and early childhood educators (TEER 2) with an Ontario employer can be linked to Express Entry for 600 extra points.
Ontario’s programsBC PNP “Care: Education” draws
British Columbia runs targeted draws for early childhood educators with a BC job offer, at scores well below its general rounds. Other provinces weigh teaching shortages in their own streams.
British Columbia’s programA Canadian B.Ed or ECE diploma
If your training would not meet the College’s standard, a Canadian program solves certification and adds CRS points, but weigh the cost and the post-graduation work permit rules first.

Do I need an Ontario teaching certificate to immigrate to Canada as a teacher?
No. Express Entry asks for work experience in an eligible occupation and an assessment of your education. Certification by the Ontario College of Teachers governs whether you can teach in a publicly funded school once you are in Canada, and it is a separate file that can run alongside your immigration application.
Which NOC codes are in the Express Entry education category?
Secondary school teachers (41220), elementary school and kindergarten teachers (41221), early childhood educators and assistants (42202), instructors of persons with disabilities (42203) and elementary and secondary school teacher assistants (43100). University professors, college instructors and school counsellors are not included.
How much teaching experience do I need for the education category?
At least 12 months of full-time work experience, or the same amount part-time, in one eligible occupation within the last three years. It can be from any country and does not need to be continuous. IRCC raised the requirement from six months to twelve when it renewed the category in February 2026.
Can I apply from India without Canadian experience?
Yes. The education category does not require Canadian experience. Twelve months of teaching in India, the Philippines, Nigeria, the Gulf or anywhere else meets the category requirement, provided your school letters state the grades taught, hours and salary.
Are early childhood educators included?
Yes. Early childhood educators and assistants (NOC 42202) are in the education category. In Ontario they register with the College of Early Childhood Educators rather than the College of Teachers, and British Columbia runs targeted provincial draws for ECEs with a job offer.
Which English test do teachers need for Express Entry?
IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General or PTE Core. The Academic versions are not accepted for immigration. If you later apply to the Ontario College of Teachers and trained in another language, it asks separately for IELTS Academic at a higher band.
Does a one-year B.Ed qualify?
For immigration, yes: the code you claim follows the grades and subjects you taught. For certification, the Ontario College of Teachers looks for a four-semester teacher education program with 80 days of supervised practice teaching, so a one-year program may lead to a conditional certificate with additional courses named.
What was the CRS cut-off in the last education round?
The last education round, on 17 September 2025, invited 2,500 candidates at a cut-off of 462, against 534 in the Canadian Experience Class round the same week. The first education round, on 1 May 2025, invited 1,000 at 479. The cut-off moves with each round and is not guaranteed.
Can I start Ontario certification before I land?
Largely, yes. The Ontario College of Teachers does not make immigration status a condition of applying, so the evaluation, language test and Mathematics Proficiency Test can be done from abroad. The Canadian criminal record check is usually completed after you arrive.
How long does the Ontario College of Teachers take?
The College evaluates a complete internationally educated application within about 60 days, and an application stays valid for one year. Collecting transcripts, statements of professional standing and test results usually takes longer than the evaluation itself.
